Join us for a STEAM workshop to learn the science of art conservation!  Art Conservation is an unusual profession that unites the arts and sciences to preserve tangible cultural heritage.  This new Saturday workshop will introduce participants to the field of conservation, highlighting the role of museums in the preservation of cultural heritage.  The program is geared for curious teen girls who are exploring their future academic and professional paths.

 Participants will:

  • TOUR the galleries with docents to see examples of conservation treatment, preventive care, and materials research
  • VISIT the Parsons Conservation Laboratory to meet professional conservators and hear about in-progress work on ancient objects
  • APPLY science to art by measuring the acidity of old papers and identifying salts from ceramic fragments
  •  INTERACT with aspiring conservators who will share their experiences of studying arts and sciences in preparation for careers in cultural heritage preservation

Participants will also have time to explore Emory University campus, highlighting the academic quadrangle, library, student center, residences, and public art installations.

This program is for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts (6th-10th grade).  This workshop will be hosted at the Carlos Museum on Emory's campus. Each Girl Scout must have an adult (parent, guardian, or Troop Leader) on-site.  The workshop has space for a small number of adults to join the Girl Scouts; interested adults will need to register themselves.  Other adults and siblings are welcome to explore the museum on their own or enjoy the on-site coffee shop.  Space is limited so register today!  All questions can be directed to us at STEM@gsgatl.org.

Please note that registration closes two weeks before the event to allow for planning, set up, and other preparations.  Be sure to register early!
