Welcome to our newest program: The Justice Experience in partnership with the Center for Civil and Human Rights!
Join us for a curated, Girl Scouts-only museum experience in partnership with multiple branches of the Center, including their Education Department and LGBTQ+ Institute. The exhibits open at 10a on Friday (7/18) and Saturday (7/19) and are available to explore at your leisure until doors close at 5pm.
Take a self-guided tour through the Mableton Service Center and meet the heroes and heroines of social justice in the American South and learn about the events that transformed our nation during the Civil Rights, women's empowerment, or LGBTQ+ movements! Then, visit our Reflection Station to complete your tour experience. Tour and reflection time will vary from Girl Scout to Girl Scout as there will be special activities along with informational materials to experience. Please plan to spend at least an hour to an hour and a half with us!
Join us for special presentations hosted by Director of the LGBTQ+ Institute for the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Tim'm West:
Friday (7/18) at 4pm: The Montgomery Bus Boycott session invites the girls to explore the planning and organization process that went into the pivotal Montgomery Bus Boycott through interactive, group activities and discussion. Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to see how much forethought and what kind of collaboration was needed to build a movement.
Saturday (7/19) at 4pm: What to Do When You Care So Much?: Self-Care for the Advocate is a self-care session for those interested in pursuing career or volunteer roles that focuses on others, i.e. teachers, activists, medicine, nonprofit, etc. This could be a great opportunity for adult Girl Scout volunteers as well to learn some new self-care tips and advice.
Girl Scouts who participate in at least two tour exhibits (either the Civil Rights, Women's Empowerment, or LGBTQ+ exhibits), complete the self-guided materials, and visit the Reflection Station will have completed steps towards the Finding Common Ground (Cadette) and Public Policy (Ambassador) badges which can be purchased on site at the Badge and Sash store.
Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors who complete at least two exhibits from the tour, the self-guided materials, visit the Reflection Station, and participate in one of the presentations hosted by the Center for Civil and Human Rights will have satisfied the steps towards their "aMAZE!," "GIRLtopia," and "Your Voice, Your World: The Power of Advocacy" journeys respectively.
At least one journey or a journey and Silver Awards are needed to qualify to start a Gold Award. NOTE: Girl Scouts will still need to take the resources and tools provided from this event to complete their Take Action projects.
Thanks to generous sponsorship from the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the costs of this program have been reduced.
